Jamaica is one of the more straightforward Caribbean lanes to ship to, and one of the easiest places to lose money on a first import. Moving the unit is not the hard part. What catches venue owners out is everything that happens between the quay and the first wedding held inside it.
This is written for a hotel, a resort or an event rental company bringing in its first mobile wedding venue — an expandable event trailer that arrives whole rather than as building materials.
A supplier quotation is usually an EXW figure: the unit built and loaded at the works. Everything after that belongs to the importer, and duty is charged on the CIF value — unit price plus freight plus insurance — under the CARICOM Common External Tariff. The rate follows the HS code your broker declares, so two similar units can clear at different bands.
General Consumption Tax then applies at 15% on the duty-inclusive value, not on the CIF value alone. On top of that sit the smaller lines: a standards compliance fee of 0.3% of CIF, an environmental levy of 0.5%, a customs administrative fee and stamp duty.
Modelled together, the duty and levy stack commonly adds 40% to 55% of CIF. That is the figure to work from when comparing suppliers, because the ocean rate is the smallest variable in it.
Classification decides both the duty band and the paperwork. A unit that arrives on its own running gear and is declared as a trailer sits in one heading; the same structure set on a permanent base, or presented as prefabricated sections, can fall into another with a different rate and different licence conditions. Get the heading confirmed in writing before the vessel sails. A classification query raised after arrival is what turns a five-day clearance into two weeks of storage charges.
Two local rules shape the process. Commercial goods with a CIF value above US$5,000 must be cleared by a licensed broker, and vehicles go through a broker regardless of value. When an agent files for you, the importer completes a C73 authorisation — valid for a year — and pays the associated processing fee. Your Taxpayer Registration Number has to be in place before the cargo berths; the registration is not instant, and storage accrues while it is arranged.
Kingston handles most China-origin containers, through the Freeport terminal and Kingston Wharves. Montego Bay serves the north coast, and discharging there removes a long road movement for venues in the Ocho Rios to Montego Bay corridor — a real cost on a unit of this size, and a real risk to a delivery date.
Ocean transit from a Chinese port runs roughly 26 to 36 days on a full container and 30 to 40 days on a consolidated shipment, before clearance. Because the unit ships whole, there is no site assembly to schedule: it deploys by hydraulic side expansion where it is parked. Transport width is around 2.55 m depending on configuration, and the legal limit on the road between the port and your gate is set by the destination authorities — check that route, and the standing position, before you commit.
The island's wedding calendar is weighted to the drier months, and delivery sits at the end of a chain: build weeks, ocean transit, clearance, then commissioning on site. A venue ordering mid-season is usually buying capacity for the following one.
Work backwards from the first booked date you cannot serve, and put the delivery month into the contract rather than into an email. Three items are worth confirming in writing before payment: the declared heading, the landed cost per unit as calculated by your own broker, and the week the unit will be standing on your site. A mobile banquet hall solution of this class comes from manufacturers such as LZM in China, and units at this level run from USD 59,000 to USD 140,000 EXW depending on configuration and length.
If the route from the port is the part you are unsure about, the transport envelope is the conversation to have first: the unit moves at a width of around 2.55 m depending on configuration, and it is opened by hydraulic side expansion on arrival instead of being assembled on site.
Name the port you would discharge at and the month you need to hold your first event, and we will work the schedule back from there.
