Air conditioning on an off-road caravan is a supply decision before it is a comfort feature. A mains-powered roof unit draws more than a standard export electrical package can deliver, so choosing air conditioning also means choosing how it will be powered: a powered site, a generator, or a battery and inverter package built for it. That question is settled on the order.

Why the air conditioner is an electrical question

A roof air conditioner is a mains appliance locked to one market's voltage and frequency, so it is an order-time item on that ground alone. The harder constraint is load: cooling is the heaviest thing in a caravan, while the electrical package a model ships with is sized around the light loads — refrigerator, water pump, lighting and device charging.

The gap shows up in the published specifications. On the 16ft hard-top models the air conditioner sits on the optional equipment line alongside a 1000W modified sine-wave inverter. The 21ft off-road caravan with a 2,400 W roof air conditioner pairs that unit with a 2000W pure sine wave inverter and a lithium battery bank. A 1,000 W inverter cannot start a 2,400 W appliance — arithmetic, not opinion. Ordered that way, cooling is a powered-site feature.

Three supply paths, three different products

The configuration follows from where the caravan will stand, so settle it with the buyer first:

• Powered sites. On mains supply the air conditioner runs as designed — the normal case where customers use caravan parks, and the simplest selling point.
• A generator. It works anywhere, but brings its own weight, fuel storage, noise and servicing, and has to be part of the payload plan.
• A large battery bank with a matching inverter. The arrangement on the 21ft model: enough for daytime cooling and short evening use, with solar replenishing the bank. Around-the-clock cooling from batteries is not what these packages are for.

Remote touring customers and rental fleets in hot regions answer that question differently, which is why one caravan can be right for one and wrong for the other.

What to settle with the factory at order stage

A roof unit cannot simply be dropped in later, so it belongs in the build sheet:

• Factory-fitted or locally fitted, and the roof opening framed for it.
• Voltage and frequency version, plus parts and service support for the brand in your market.
• Cooling only, or a heat pump version that also covers shoulder-season heating.
• Filter access and condensate drainage — important in dusty markets.
• Whether the unit changes the closed height, and therefore the loading plan.

Payload, stability and the sales conversation

Air conditioning is also weight in the least helpful place: on the roof, high above the axle line, working against towing stability and consuming payload already promised for water, batteries and options. It belongs in the payload budget from the first quotation.

The commercial risk is simpler. A customer told the caravan has air conditioning, who then finds it cannot run without a powered site, becomes an argument about specification rather than product — so state which supply path each unit supports. The 21ft model carries a 2,400 W roof air conditioner with an integrated heat pump, a 2,000 W pure sine inverter and a 2 × 200Ah lithium bank; the 16ft hard-top models can be built with an air conditioner suited to a powered site or a generator.
