If one tyre on an off-road caravan wears faster than the other, the tyre is rarely the cause. Uneven wear appears when a wheel is dragged slightly sideways as the unit rolls, and on a caravan that usually traces back to axle tracking — how squarely the axles sit relative to the drawbar. For an importer, what matters is what to measure at delivery and what to write into the order.
A wheel that is not tracking true scrubs a little on every rotation, and the evidence shows early. On a tandem-axle unit the two axles must also sit parallel to each other; if one is skewed, its tyres fight each other and both wear quickly. The usual signatures:
Rule out the cheap causes first. A tyre running below the pressure of its pair on the same axle wears faster, and heavy items loaded to one side, or water tanks filled unevenly, change how that side's tyres work. If pressures are even and the pattern persists, treat it as a tracking question.
Tracking is measured, not guessed. With the unit level, measure from the coupling centre to the centre of each hub on the same axle — the two figures should match. On a tandem model, compare both axle-to-axle distances and the two diagonal cross-measurements; if the diagonals differ, the axles are not square to the drawbar.
Run the check as part of the pre-delivery inspection and file the figures with the unit. If a customer reports uneven wear months later, those numbers separate a factory issue from a pressure or loading issue. The suspension you ordered decides what can be corrected afterwards: independent systems, such as the X-TRACK independent coil spring suspension on the 21ft off-road caravan with independent coil spring suspension, can often be adjusted at the mounts, while a solid beam axle normally cannot be re-aligned without reworking parts. A trailer alignment specialist can measure it properly.
Most of this is settled before the chassis is welded, and writing it down costs nothing at quotation stage.
A caravan has no driven wheels, so nothing hides a tracking fault: a misaligned tandem scrubs its way through a set of tyres while the customer is watching, and tyres are the item they were always going to replace first. On a rental fleet or demo unit, that happens far sooner than on a caravan sitting in a showroom. The correction is usually modest; the conversation with a customer who has already paid is not.
Most 16ft hard-top models run an independent trailing-arm suspension with four shock absorbers and 265/75 R16 mud-terrain tyres on a 3,000 kg ATM, and the running gear of each model is listed across the off-road caravans for dealers range. Send a photo of the wear pattern with the measurements you took and we will say whether it reads as tracking or as pressure and loading.
