A mobile clinic exists because the patients are somewhere the clinic is not: outreach screening, vaccination drives, rural clinics and hospital overflow all need a private, cleanable, properly powered room — and none of them need it at the same address permanently. The usual answers are borrowing space in a building, hiring a hall, or putting up a tent. The tent is where most outreach projects start and where they usually hit trouble: no insulation, no proper partitions, and a generator running outside the consultation room. It is written for health service providers, contractors and NGOs specifying mobile medical space, and for dealers asked whether this class of structure can be used clinically.
Consultations, examinations and sample collection each need a closable, separated room, so the layout is drawn around the number of simultaneous patient contacts rather than total floor area. Hand-wash points, wipeable floors and a clean-to-dirty flow belong in that plan from the start, because retrofitting them later costs more space than designing for them would have. Access matters equally — door widths and a level threshold for wheelchairs and trolleys — and equipment such as vaccine and sample fridges cannot share a circuit that trips when the air conditioning starts.
Borrowed space is fast, but you inherit the entrance, the plumbing and the neighbours, and it cannot follow the programme to the next district. A tent gives area on short notice but is uninsulated, hard to partition and usually seasonal. Modular units are repeatable but still a construction project: foundations, lifting, service connections and a fixed position.
A hard-sided expandable trailer sits between those categories. It travels road-legal and opens hydraulically on both sides on site — not a manual push-pull system — to several times its transport footprint, in roughly 30 minutes with two people. Expanded usable area is 96 m² to 235 m² depending on model, interior height is approximately 3.8 m and above, transport width approximately 2.55 m, walls and roof are insulated with 50 mm polyurethane (PU) sandwich panels and interiors are B2 fire-retardant rated. A supplier can provide the trailer, layout drawings, structural and material documentation, CE documentation, the anchoring specification and the electrical specification. A supplier cannot provide medical licensing, accreditation or health-authority approval, and should not imply it can. The operator remains the responsible body, so get the authority's requirements in writing before the layout is fixed: what local rules say about a relocatable medical facility, who signs off the use, and what applies to medical waste, sharps, drainage and drug storage. If a supplier says a unit can simply be delivered and opened as a clinic, ask for that in writing and test it.
