Event Trailer Power or Hydraulic Backup: What to Check Before You Buy | LZM

The failure that ruins an event day is not a leak or a ding in the panel. It is the forty minutes before the doors open, when you press the control and the walls do not move — or the evening after the last guest leaves, when the unit will not close so it can be towed home. Every operator of a hydraulic venue asks this question eventually, usually while standing on site looking at a unit that is already delivered. It is far cheaper to ask it before the order is placed.

This is written for the people who carry that risk: venue owners, event rental fleets, hotels and resorts running mobile space, and production companies that deploy units on client sites. It covers what a power failure actually stops, what a hydraulic failure actually means, which backup systems exist and — the part most quotations leave out — which of them are standard and which are not.

Power failure and hydraulic failure are two different problems

They sound similar and they are answered very differently, so separate them first.

A power failure means the electrical supply that drives the expansion pump is gone. The site supply tripped, the cable run failed, a breaker went, or there was never a supply point on that field in the first place. The hydraulics themselves are usually healthy — nothing is broken, nothing is leaking. They simply have no electricity.

A hydraulic failure means something in the fluid or mechanical side has stopped working: a pump motor, a solenoid or valve, a cylinder seal, a hose, the fluid level, or the control circuit. Here the electrical supply can be perfect and the unit still will not move.

The distinction matters because the recovery routes are different, and because quotations tend to quote one and not the other.

What a power outage does — and does not — stop

The useful fact is this: on an expandable venue, a power outage does not by itself put the unit out of action. The expansion system can be fed from an external generator, and with power restored the hydraulic cycle continues as normal. For operators, that turns "the site has no supply" from a cancelled booking into a generator decision.

Two practical consequences follow.

  • Check where the generator is on your equipment list. If a generator is on the quotation, or on your own fleet list, a site without a supply point is workable. If nobody has specified one, the assumption that "the site will have power" is doing a lot of quiet work in your planning.
  • Plan generator capacity around the whole event load, not just the expansion. Expansion is a short, intermittent load that runs for minutes; lighting, air conditioning, kitchen and audio run for hours. Sizing the generator on the expansion alone is a common mistake. Ask the supplier for the electrical schedule of the unit you are buying and pass it to your generator supplier.

What to do when the hydraulics are the problem

This is the case where advance specification decides the outcome.

Manufacturers can supply emergency and manual backup arrangements for the expansion hydraulics. The options that exist in this class of equipment include a manual pump, a manual release valve, an emergency hydraulic pump, and a mechanical locking device. Their purpose is to give a crew a way to move or secure a unit when the normal powered cycle is unavailable.

The honest and important part: these are optional equipment, not standard fitment. They are not automatically included in a unit, they are not present on every quotation, and they should be written into the specification before the order is confirmed rather than assumed afterwards. If your operating plan depends on being able to retract a unit without power, that has to be a line item, not an expectation.

A few things worth understanding before you decide:

  • A manual pump is a recovery method, not an operating mode. It is slow and it takes physical effort, and the effort grows with the floor area being moved. It exists so that a unit can be moved or closed in a difficult situation, not so a crew can deploy a large venue by hand every week.
  • Ask whether the backup can be added later. For a unit already in service, the answer depends on the model and the current hydraulic layout, and it should come from the factory in writing rather than from assumption.
  • Ask who performs the procedure and where the access points are. A manual override that nobody on the crew can locate is not a backup. The information has to arrive as part of the handover documentation and be practiced at least once.
  • Locking and securing matter as much as moving. If a unit cannot be closed on schedule, the immediate question becomes how it is held safely overnight, with guests or furniture inside, and what the site rules require.

What preventive maintenance does to this risk

Most hydraulic failures on this class of equipment do not arrive without warning. Seal wear, slow cylinders, small leaks, fluid condition and control faults tend to show up first as behaviour that is slightly off: a side that moves marginally slower than the other, a pump that sounds different, a joint that weeps. A scheduled service routine catches those in the workshop instead of on site.

That is the reason to ask for the maintenance schedule and the recommended service interval along with the quotation, and to ask which spare parts a fleet should hold locally — seals, hoses, fluid specification. A unit that is waiting three weeks for a seal is a unit that missed three bookings.

The other habit worth building is the pre-event function test. Run the full cycle — out and closed again — at least a day before the event, on the actual ground, with the actual crew. Testing on the morning of the event converts a recoverable delay into a lost booking.

Six questions to put to the supplier in writing

Put these in the enquiry, not in a phone call after the delivery date is fixed.

  • Is any emergency or manual backup for the hydraulics included in this quotation, or is it a separate option line?
  • Which components exactly are included — manual pump, manual release valve, emergency hydraulic pump, mechanical locking?
  • Can it be retrofitted to units already delivered, and what does that involve?
  • What is the recommended service interval for the hydraulic system, and which spare parts should be held locally?
  • Who is expected to service the system in my market, and what documentation do they receive?
  • What is the printed procedure for securing the unit if it cannot be closed on schedule?

For safety-related figures — structural capacity, wind performance, anchoring requirements — ask what the number is based on and confirm it for your specific site conditions. Some performance figures in this equipment class are experience-based estimates rather than tested values for every configuration, and the anchoring and tie-down arrangement for an open, exposed site is a project-specific decision. A supplier who can explain the basis of a figure is more useful to you than one who only repeats it.

One option in the venue question

This failure-and-backup conversation sits inside a wider decision about how an operator gets more covered space: a permanent building, a marquee, a hotel ballroom, a modular structure, or a relocatable unit. Failure planning is one of the criteria that separates them, because the consequences are not equal — a marquee that cannot be raised has no hydraulic system to recover, while a building gives up nothing to weather but cannot be moved to the next booking.

One option is an expandable event trailer, which operators evaluate when the requirement is covered space that can be relocated.
