Event Trailer Support Legs: Hydraulic vs Manual, and What It Means for Your Setup Crew | LZM

Four of the legs that carry an expandable event trailer are hydraulically operated. The small auxiliary outriggers are manual, and that is not a temporary limitation — they are not offered in a hydraulic or electric version, and they cannot be converted later. If part of your buying case is "nobody should have to bend down and turn anything by hand", you need to know that before the quotation is signed, not after the unit lands on site.

Everything else in the deployment sequence is quick: hydraulic dual-side expansion, roughly 30 minutes for two people. The legs are simply the part of the routine where a person still does a small amount of physical work, and the honest thing is to plan for it.

Why the legs carry more of the story than buyers expect

A trailer arrives on its wheels and axles, which are built for the road, not for standing still as a building. Before the sides can move, the unit has to be lifted off its suspension, held level, and supported at points that suit the expanded hall rather than the transport length. Only then does the expansion sequence start.

After that, the leg system takes on loads that change through the day:

  • The structure itself, which is far heavier expanded than retracted, because the floor and roof panels that were folded together are now cantilevered out to the sides.
  • Everything that goes in afterwards — tables and rounds, staging, bar counters, AV, catering equipment and guests, all of it arriving after the unit is already set.
  • The rated structure loads carried by the platform: a roof load of roughly 300 kg/m² and a floor load in the same order depending on configuration, plus wind resistance documented to Force 9 (approximately 47–54 mph).

A leg set that is set correctly, on ground that can take the load, is what keeps the expanded hall where you put it. That is why the leg configuration belongs in the specification discussion rather than in the delivery-day surprise column.

What is hydraulic and what is manual

The division of labour is deliberately simple:

  • Main legs — hydraulic. Four main legs, hydraulically operated. They do the lifting and levelling that would otherwise be the slowest and heaviest part of the setup.
  • Auxiliary outriggers — manual. The smaller outriggers are positioned by hand. They are stabilising elements rather than lifting elements, and they are not available with hydraulics or electric drive.

Buyers who come from an equipment background sometimes assume that anything described as "hydraulic legs" means the entire support package is powered. It does not. Ask for the leg schedule in writing — how many legs, which ones are powered, and which are adjusted by hand — and compare that figure across the quotes you are holding. If you are working through configurations in general, the published range for hydraulic expanding trailers is a reasonable starting point, but the leg schedule is a build-specific document.

Can the small outriggers be automated later?

No. This is worth stating plainly because vague answers here waste months: the auxiliary outriggers are manual only, and retrofitting hydraulics or electric actuators to them is not something the factory offers. A supplier who answers this question with "we are checking whether it can be done" is not doing you a favour.

What it means in practice is smaller than the wording suggests. The routine is a two-person job inside the same 30-minute window, and the manual part of it is a fixed sequence that a crew learns once. On a rental fleet, that translates into a line in the run sheet and a step in the training rather than a change in how many people you send out.

What it does mean is that if your operating model assumes a genuinely hands-off deployment — for example, a unit that a single operator sets alone, or a site where the crew cannot work around the base of the unit — then the manual outriggers are a real constraint, and a conversation about layout and access is more useful than a conversation about price.

The ground does as much work as the legs

Legs transfer load into whatever is underneath them, so the surface decides how well the whole system performs. Before the unit is set, these are the checks that matter:

  • Level. The structure expands properly when the platform is level. A slope that looks acceptable for a parked trailer can become a problem once the sides are out and the floor is loaded.
  • Firm and consistent. Soft ground, recently filled areas, and surfaces that soften in the rain behave differently under a point load than a compacted hardstanding does.
  • Point loading. The load arrives at a small number of feet, not spread evenly over the footprint, which is why local load-spreading arrangements are usually discussed with the site rather than assumed.
  • Drainage. Water that pools around the base of the unit is a problem for the ground and for access, long before it is a problem for the building.
  • Ground condition across the whole footprint, not just under the legs, since the expanded hall covers a much larger area than the retracted trailer.

None of these can be settled from a distance. If you send site photographs and describe the surface, the factory or your installer can tell you what needs preparing — but the ground-bearing check belongs to whoever owns the site, and local requirements vary by location.

What to put in writing before you sign

The spec sheet, not the sales conversation, is what your crew will work from in year three. Keep these points explicit:

  • Leg schedule — number of main legs, number of auxiliary outriggers, and which are powered.
  • Where the manual work happens in the deployment and pack-down sequence, so your run sheet and your labour estimate are accurate.
  • Ground preparation responsibility — who levels and prepares the surface, and to what standard, before the unit arrives.
  • Site-specific anchoring and wind requirements, confirmed against your location rather than assumed from a rating.
  • Whether the unit travels on a chassis or is set down without one. A hall that is installed without a chassis stays on its support system permanently rather than temporarily, which changes what is expected of the ground and the feet. Confirm this for your configuration with the engineers.
  • Access for inspection and service around the base of the unit, including how the hydraulic system is reached once the hall is dressed and in use.

The rental-fleet version of this question

For rental companies, the leg routine is an operations detail with a pricing consequence. A two-person crew, a known 30-minute deployment, and a short manual step at the base is a straightforward job to schedule and to train. What is not straightforward is discovering the sequence on site with a client standing next to you.

Two practical habits come out of that. First, run the full deployment once in the yard with the crew who will actually do it, and time the manual steps rather than the whole sequence. Second, keep the leg and ground checklist with the booking file, because the site conditions are a property of the booking, not of the trailer.
