Brakes on an imported off-road caravan are ordered, not chosen at delivery. Three things decide whether the unit can be registered, towed and serviced in your market: the brake type and size matched to the axle rating, a breakaway system that is properly wired and functioning, and compatibility with the tow vehicles your customers actually drive — meaning an in-cab brake controller and a plug standard that matches. Settle these before production starts, because retrofitting a braking system after the container lands costs several times more than specifying it correctly at the factory.
Most importers review brakes the way they review a spare wheel: as something present or absent. In practice, braking is one of the few caravan systems that has to satisfy three parties at once.
None of these three issues can be fixed cheaply after shipment, and all three are decided by one or two lines on the specification sheet. That is the whole argument for treating brakes as a pre-order item.
Off-road caravans built for export markets are normally offered with one of three braking arrangements, and the differences matter commercially as much as technically.
Unbraked caravans exist at the light end of the range, and many destinations restrict them above a certain weight. If the models you plan to import sit at touring weights, assume the specification will be braked and plan accordingly.
The relevant question is not which system is technically superior. It is which system your dealers, your customers and your local workshops can actually live with. A high-specification disc system that no workshop within 200 kilometres can service is a problem you bought for yourself at the same time as the caravan.
A brake specification is only useful if it is specific. Four items are worth reading on any model sheet:
Brake size and axle rating travel together. A larger drum is designed to absorb more braking energy, and brake assemblies are matched to an axle load rather than to the caravan's total mass. That is why a brake line has to be read next to the tare, ATM and axle ratings of the same model — brakes sized for a lighter axle under a heavier caravan is a specification error, and it is not something a weight discussion can solve later.
Several LZM export models document 12-inch electromagnetic brakes with a handbrake and a drawbar-mounted emergency breakaway system, on tandem axles with independent coil spring suspension. Configurations differ between sizes, and specifications vary by model and final configuration, so work from the build sheet for your exact order rather than from a general model description.
A breakaway system is a fail-safe. A switch on the drawbar holds a pin; a tether runs from that pin to the tow vehicle. If the caravan separates from the vehicle while towing, the pin is pulled, a dedicated battery on the caravan energises the brakes, and the unit is brought to a stop instead of rolling free.
Three practical consequences follow for an importer.
There is also a training point that costs dealers goodwill. A breakaway system is not a park brake. It applies full braking from a small battery and is designed to run flat in the process. Customers who use it as a parking device will damage it and complain about the caravan.
Electric brakes only work if the tow vehicle can operate them, and two items decide that.
The first is the brake controller. A caravan with electric brakes expects a controller fitted in the cab, either as part of a factory tow package or as an aftermarket installation. The importer's job is not to supply the controller, but to know which type the caravan's brakes are designed to work with, and to tell both the dealer and the end customer before delivery. Where the controller is not standard on the vehicles common in your market, put that in the dealer's handover script rather than in a complaint three months later.
The second is the plug. Connector standards are not universal: Australian-market builds commonly use a 12-pin flat plug, North American tow vehicles typically a 7-pin blade connector, and European vehicles commonly a 13-pin plug. Just as important is what travels on the circuit — the caravan's breakaway battery is normally kept charged from the tow vehicle while driving, which means the plug needs a charge wire and the vehicle needs to be wired for it. A connector that fits but omits the charging circuit leaves the fail-safe running on a battery that never recharges.
Importers specifying off-road caravans for US RV dealers and their equivalents in other markets should fix both points on the order sheet: the plug standard and pin-out, the presence of a charge wire, and a written statement of the controller type the brakes are designed for. One line in a specification removes an entire class of delivery-day arguments.
Brakes are often reduced to a stopping-distance discussion, but the stability question is the one that generates warranty claims. Two practical points sit behind it.
First, balance. Braking effort has to be even left to right and proportional front to rear, and it depends on how the load is distributed over the axles. An owner who loads all the heavy equipment at the rear of a tandem caravan changes the braking behaviour of the whole unit, no matter how well the brakes were specified.
Second, electronic assistance. Some higher-specification export models include electronic stability control with asymmetric braking, which senses sway and applies individual wheel brakes to correct it. Documented examples include LZM's 22ft model, alongside its larger coupling. Systems like this help, but they work within the limits of a correctly specified, correctly adjusted braking system — they do not compensate for brakes that are undersized, badly adjusted or fed by an inadequate plug circuit.
Off-road use adds one maintenance consideration: brake drums collect dust and do not enjoy long submersion in water. That is a service-interval conversation with the dealer, not a reason to choose a brake type.
Brakes are the fastest-moving spare on a dealer shelf, and the first order is the cheapest moment to stock them. A practical first kit covers brake shoes, magnet or actuator assemblies, complete backing plate assemblies, drums, breakaway batteries and switches, and handbrake cables.
Two questions are worth asking while you negotiate that kit. The first is whether brake assemblies are shared across models in the range — commonality lets a dealer resolve a customer's problem the same day instead of quoting a lead time. The second is whether the assemblies carry a brand and part number that can be cross-referenced locally, because that is what makes a caravan serviceable after the first two years of ownership. Ask for both in writing, and add a breakaway battery to the first order even though it is not a wear item: it is small, inexpensive and the component most likely to be flat after a long period in stock.
No. Lighter units are sometimes offered with mechanical overrun braking, and very light caravans may be unbraked. Electric drum brakes are the common arrangement on mid-size and larger off-road export models, which means the tow vehicle needs a controller. Confirm the arrangement for the exact model you are quoting rather than assuming it from the size of the caravan.
In many markets an independent breakaway system is required on braked caravans above a certain weight, but the threshold and the approval process differ by destination. Check the requirement with your registration authority before the order is placed, and make sure the system supplied includes the switch, tether and battery, not just the mounting point.
Not usefully. Without a controller the caravan's brakes either do not operate or apply without proportion, which makes the unit harder to stop and less stable under load. The controller is a tow-vehicle item, so it belongs in the dealer handover conversation — and in the specification as a stated controller type.
Ask for three things in the pre-shipment inspection record: a brake function test on the braked axles, a breakaway test with the pin pulled to confirm the brakes apply, and photographic evidence of the wiring and plug termination. All three are simple to record at the factory and expensive to resolve after the container is on the water.
Brakes rarely decide whether an importer places a first order, but they decide whether the second container arrives on schedule — because the first one either registered cleanly and towed the way customers expect, or it did not.
